Pacific Invitational - Final Results (PDF)
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Marquette senior Mike Van Sickle birdied his last four holes playing in the final round Wednesday at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational and rallied for an unlikely comeback to claim his school-record ninth collegiate tournament win at the par-71 Brookside Country Club.
In dramatic fashion, Van Sickle sank putts of 18- and 25-feet, respectively, on his final two holes to rise to the top of the individual leaderboard with a two-under-par 69.
Starting this morning on hole 10, Van Sickle overcame some early hiccups and was even par at the turn. He then went to two-over with back-to-back bogeys on holes one and two before his late surge.
Overall, Van Sickle carded seven birdies on the day. He began his third round tied for fifth place, but completed the event with a four-under 209 (70-70-69). Van Sickle also avoided a playoff as there were four other players tied for second at three-under for the tournament.
Its the second straight win for Van Sickle, who dominated the Xavier Invitational in mid-October, and third victory in five team events this season. Van Sickle's win at the Gopher Invitational to open the 2008 campaign was also in come-from-behind fashion.
Van Sickle's strong finish also vaulted Marquette a few spots up in the team standings. MU was as low as 11th in the 12-team field, but ended up tied for eighth place at 873 (292-288-293) with UC Santa Barbara and host Pacific.
Marquette Sophomore Ben Sieg and freshman Kelly Kretz finished the day at three-over 74. Freshman Matt Haase had the team's best overall finish behind Van SIckle at seven-over 220 (74-72-74) for the tournament.
