STOCKTON, Calif. - The Marquette University men's golf team made a drastic comeback Wednesday with a team score of 275 in the third round of The Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.

The Golden Eagles finished third place overall in their final team tournament of the fall, which wrapped up today at the par-72 Brookside Country Club.

"Playing as poorly as we did yesterday really deflated the guys," said MU head coach Tim Grogan, whose team dropped from second to sixth place following a 286 on Tuesday. "We put up some pretty big numbers during the middle of the second round. Take that away and we had a very solid tournament."

Michael Bielawski led the charge with a 65, the lowest round of the day and tying him with Kansas State's Joe Ida for the lowest individual round of the tournament. Bielawski boasted eight birdies Wednesday, including five birdies on the back nine.

"[Bielawski] was the first guy out, so it was important for him to set the tone and momentum for the team," said Grogan. "He had a poor first round, but putted better and better as the tournament went on. It's a huge plus for him to finish strong like that.

Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, Mike Van Sickle continued his solid play, posting three-straight rounds in the 60s to finish tied for sixth place at 205, six strokes behind medalist Stefan Wiedergruen (199) of top-ranked Charlotte.

Meanwhile, freshman Kelly Kretz birdied his last three holes and finished with a 68. Kretz's three-day total was 206 which tied him for ninth place overall.

"This was total a team effort," said Grogan. "Kretz got better as the year went on and Van Sickle played well like he always does."

Charlotte took home the team title, finishing at 40-under (824), two strokes ahead of Kansas State, which had led the 14-team field after the first two rounds. Oregon (837) finished one stroke behind the Golden Eagles to finish in fourth place.

Marquette will not play again until the Ron Smith/USF Invitational to be held Feb. 29 through March 2, 2008 at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.

"When we get home, we're going to evaluate everything," said Grogan. "But first we're going to take a 10-day break or so before beginning our conditioning program and get back into the classroom and back on track academically."
