Sanchez Invited to Latin America Amateur Championship
Jan. 13, 2015
MILWAUKEE - Pat Sanchez of the Marquette University men's golf team will represent Mexico at the inaugural Latin America Amateur Golf Championship (LAAC), Jan. 15-18 at Pilar Golf Club in Pilar, Argentina.
The tournament champion will gain an automatic invitation to the 2015 Masters Tournament. Each of the four championship days will be featured with two hours of daily television coverage in the United States on the ESPN family of networks.
Sanchez, a native of Mazatlan, Mexico, is part of a six-man team from his home country. The LAAC field includes the top 110 amateur players from the 28 International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized Latin American countries.
"The opportunity to represent your country and compete against some of the best in the world is well-deserved and a great honor for Patrick," Marquette coach Steve Bailey says. "As an amateur, it will be a unique and memorable experience to play for a spot in the Masters in front of a worldwide audience on ESPN."
In addition to an invitation to the 2015 Masters Tournament, both the LAAC champion and runner-up will earn qualifying exemptions for the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland, and the 2015 U.S. Open Championship at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.
Through the fall of his junior season, Sanchez has helped lead Marquette to a national ranking of No. 71 (Golfstat), the highest rank in the BIG EAST. Sanchez was named BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Month for September after posting three top-11 finishes in three tournaments. During the fall, Sanchez fired three sub-70 rounds, including a 4-under par 68 on the first day of the Badger Invitational on Sept. 28.
