MILWAUKEE -- The BIG EAST Conference has selected Marquette University junior Alison McBride (women’s soccer) and senior Mike Van Sickle (men’s golf) as its Marquette representatives to receive the league’s respective 2008-09 women’s and men’s BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The selections, made by the Conference’s Academic Affairs Committee, were made earlier this month. Each institutional winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship toward graduate studies.
McBride was an integral part of Marquette’s back line during the 2008 campaign, starting in 21 of 22 games. She was one of two MU defenders to find the back of the net during the 2008 season, netting a goal during the first round of the NCAA tournament. McBride is enrolled in the College of Nursing and has accumulated a 3.5 overall grade point average during her time as a Golden Eagle.
“This is a very special honor for Alli,” said Markus Roeders, head women’s soccer coach. “Her work in the classroom has been outstanding and she provides great leadership to our team. Considering a back injury denied her from playing competitive soccer for nearly 18 months, we felt blessed to have her back on the field this past fall. She has an incredible commitment to excellence on and off the field and this honor is a direct reward of all her hard work.”
A preseason all-American, Van Sickle won four of the six tournaments he competed in this past fall, adding to his school record number of collegiate victories (10). Van Sickle is a senior in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication and is on track to graduate this May with a degree in broadcast and electronic communication.
“Mike exemplifies the ‘student-athlete,’ he exceeds expectations, and he's a great representative for Marquette University,” said men’s golf head coach Tim Grogan. “He has been outstanding on the golf course, while he continues to be equally dedicated to his academics. He's not only one of the nation's top golfers, but he's also one of Marquette's all-round true leaders.”
Van Sickle was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA as a junior, one of the top awards in collegiate golf. Van Sickle was also honored as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star for 2007-08.
