Marquette University Men's Golf Announces 2012-13 Signees
Feb. 22, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's golf team has signed three new golfers in the 2012-13 recruiting class. Nick Nelson, Zach Gaugert, and Patrick Sanchez signed on to play at Marquette under head coach Steve Bailey.
"Nick, Patrick, and Zach bring a wealth of national and international tournament experience," said Bailey, "but more importantly they are first class people who come from great families."
Bailey went on to say that "all three have tallied impressive junior resumes and they possess leadership qualities that will elevate our program right away."
Nelson, who attends Decorah High School in Decorah, Iowa, ranks as the number one prep player in Iowa according to the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"I love Nick's passion for the game and his desire to improve is unmatched," Bailey said. "I am confident he will make an immediate impact on our program."
Nelson recorded high finishes in national tournaments such as the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) McArthur Junior (5th), the AJGA Nebraska Junior (9th), and the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities (12th). He also was an all-conference guard for Decorah's boys’ basketball team.
Gaugert, a senior at Waunakee High School in Waunakee Wis., played both golf and football in high school, impressing in both sports.
"The moment you meet Zach," said Bailey, "it's evident he's a tremendous athlete and leader, who possess an infectious ability to make those around him better."
Now that Gaugert will not be splitting time between golf and football, where he won three state titles, Bailey feels "the sky is the limit" with Gaugert's potential.
Sanchez, a native of Mazatlan, Mexico, already has experience as an amateur on the Canadian and Nationwide Tours.
"He brings a tremendous amount of experience and success to the program," Bailey said. "Patrick's demeanor and maturity is pro-like and that, coupled with his commitment to getting better, makes him a perfect fit for what we are looking to build at Marquette."
In addition to competing in two Canadian Tour events and the Nationwide Mexican Open, Sanchez won the US Junior Amateur Qualifier and was rated as the seventh best international junior player in 2012 by Golfweek Magazine.
All three recruits should contribute to Bailey's vision early on in their respective careers.
"We are working on building something special at Marquette, and these three guys will go a long way in setting that foundation," said Bailey.
