NEW YORK — Marquette sophomore Charlie Maleki was named BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career when the league office announced its weekly awards on Thursday.
Maleki posted a 221 score (74-74-73), T-54, at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University. His standing in the strength of field was key at The Goodwin - the 24-team, 126-player event included five teams in the Bushnell/Golfweek Top 25, eight top-50 teams (Golfstat ranking) and 21 top-100 players (Golfstat).
His 11-over-par (Par 70) led Marquette and was better than four of Division I’s top-100 players in the event, where the average score was 74.15. Maleki had nine birdies during the weekend and posted a final round 73, which included an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 hole.
The sophomore from Mequon is the fourth Marquette player to earn BIG EAST honors this season. MU has more conference honors than any team on the men's side in 2016-17.
