Van Sickle Earns Third BIG EAST Golfer of the Week Honor
April 16, 2009
MILWAUKEE - For the third time this spring, Marquette University senior Mike Van Sickle has been named the BIG EAST Conference Golfer of the Week it was announced Thursday by league officials. Van Sickle earned his school-record 11th collegiate title by coming from behind to win the Palisades Collegiate Classic, April 13-14.
Van Sickle rallied on day two of the tournament, closing with back-to-back birdies to finish at 16-under-par 200, a tournament record. It is the fifth win this season for Van Sickle, who carded scores of 69-65-66, and the fourth time this year that he has had to come from behind in a tournament to claim medalist honors.
Van Sickle's two-day total was one stroke shy of matching his 54-hole collegiate low score of 199, also a school record, which he fired back in October en route to winning the Xavier Invitational. Marquette placed third overall with a team score of six-under 858. It was the Golden Eagles' lowest tally in their last seven events.
Marquette's all-America candidate currently leads the nation in scoring average (69.63), among several other statistical categories. He was also named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on March 12 and March 19.
