PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Marquette University has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2010 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship which begins Sunday at the par-71, 7,340-yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook.

Twelve teams will vie for title. Winner of the three-day tournament receives the league's automatic bid to an NCAA regional. Action got underway Saturday's practice round and will conclude with the third and final round on Tuesday, April 17, 2010.

The Golden Eagles have been paired in the first round with Notre Dame and Connecticut. Also competing in the event will be top-seeded Louisville and host USF, along with St. John's, DePaul, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Georgetown and Seton Hall.

MU will stick with the same lineup that finished fifth at the team's last tournament - the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C. Junior Kelly Kretz will have the No. 1 position followed in order by senior Mike McDonald, junior Ben Sieg, sophomore Matt Haase and freshman Ryan Pricket. McDonald and Prickette will be playing in first-ever BIG EAST championship tournament.

Marquette University displayed mixed results during play this past fall, a trend that continued on into the 2010 spring season. The Golden Eagles are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C., April 3-4. It was the squad's best result since placing third at the Xavier Invitational and The Firestone Invitational in back-to-back fashion back in October.

Kretz has recorded top-25 finishes in each of his past two outings. He tied for 25th at the FAU Spring Break Championship where he shot an opening-round 68, matching his individual season low round. Kretz then concluded the regular season by garnering fifth place at the Irish Creek Collegiate with a score of two-under-par 211 (72-69-70). It was the third top-five finish of Kretz's career and second of the 2009-10 campaign.

McDonald leads Marquette with a season scoring average of 74.25 followed by Kretz (74.54) and Sieg (76.33). McDonald, who has carded a team best eight rounds of par-or-better this season, recorded the best finish of his career at the Xavier Invitational where he tied for 10th place with a 214 (70-73-71). He also posted respectable finishes at the Saint Mary's Invitational (T-11th) and the Irish Creek Collegiate (T-12th).

Marquette captured its first-ever conference title in men's golf when the Golden Eagles won the 2008 BIG EAST Championship at Tradition Golf Club in Hebron, Ky. Marquette was last year's BIG EAST runner-up behind Louisville, led by Mike Van Sickle (T-2nd) and current MU sophomore Matt Haase (T-5th), who fired a tournament record 8-under-par 64 in the closing round at Lake Jovita Golf Club in Dade City, Fla.
