MILWAUKEE -- Top-seeded Marquette seeks its first league title and automatic berth to the NCAA Championships since 2008 when play begins at the 2015 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, Sunday through Tuesday (April 26-28) on the Dogwood and Magnolia courses at Callawassie Island Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina.

The Golden Eagles, runners-up in last year's championship, have earned the top seed by virtue of holding the lowest average score in the league. MU will begin play at Callawassie with an average round score of 295.15, two strokes better than second-seeded DePaul. In addition, Marquette enters championship weekend as the only member of the nine-team league ranked in the nation's top 100 (89 - Golfweek / 86 - Golfstat).

The team winner of the nine-team, three-day event will earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the 2015 NCAA Tournament field. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA field as an individual.

The 2008 edition of the Golden Eagles were led by three of the program's all-time top seven scorers - current Tour pro Mike Van Sickle, MU assistant coach Mike Bielawski, and BIG EAST Individual Champion Ted Gray. Marquette posted a team tally of 874 and Gray carded a winning score of 211 to take the titles at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Kentucky.

Marquette (892) came in ten strokes behind champion St. John's in a second place finish last April 27-29 on the same Dogwood/Magnolia Course layout. Three MU players (Brandon Cloete - T4, 221; Pat Sanchez - 6, 222; CJ Swift - T7, 223) finished in the top 10. Sanchez and Cloete matched subpar rounds of 71 - Sanchez's came in the opening round, while Cloete's low mark was in the final round.

Prior to the 2015 BIG EAST Championships, Marquette has only competed in three events this spring - the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 6-7), the El Macero Classic (April 10-12) and the Hawkeye-GRE Invitational (April 18-19). MU's best spring result came at the El Macero Classic, where the Golden Eagles posted their team low round of the season (281 - first round) and their second-lowest event score of the season (281-296-298--875) to tie for second place.

Marquette competed in seven fall events, including its home tournament, the Erin Hills Intercollegiate. Erin Hills Golf Course is the site of the 2017 Men's US Open Championships. The Golden Eagles finished third (299-295-284) in a field that included four top-25 teams. MU recorded its season-best tournament score in the fall at the Windon Memorial (283-286-287--856).

Against all teams this season, Marquette has a 64-43-2 record ... MU enters the weekend 26th in the nation with 15 eagle makes ... Sanchez posted two eagles last weekend at the Hawkeye-GRE Invitational.
