Bachmann, Marquette Coaches Take BIG EAST Honors

May 11, 2017

NEW YORK -- BIG EAST individual champion Matthew Bachmann was named the league’s freshman of the year, while head coach Steve Bailey and assistant Gator Todd took conference coaching staff of the year honors in the 2016-17 BIG EAST Men’s Golf postseason awards, announced on Thursday.

Bachmann (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) is the first Marquette player to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors and the second player in program history to garner conference rookie of the year accolades (Ted Gray - Conference USA Freshman of the Year, 2004-05).  Following his BIG EAST championship victory, an even par 216 at Callawassie Island G.C., Bachmann leads all league freshmen and ranks seventh in the conference in scoring average at 74.15 (2.42 vs. par).

The coaching staff of the year honor is the first for Marquette.  Bailey was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year last in 2015 when it was an individual honor.  In his seventh year at MU, Bailey led a team that lost four starters to graduation and a lineup that at times included three freshmen and two sophomores, to a BIG EAST title.  Marquette rallied from a 17-stroke deficit in the final round of the championship to take the crown.  Todd, a professional player with experience on the Tour and an All-SEC career at Alabama, joined the staff as an assistant coach over the summer and helped lead the team to its third conference championship.

Beginning on Monday, May 15, Marquette will play for the third time in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, when the Golden Eagles tee off in the Sammamish Region, hosted by the University of Washington at Aldarra G.C. outside of Seattle.
