ALVATON, Ky. -- Marquette University senior Mike Van Sickle begins his final quest for an individual national championship this Thursday at the NCAA Division I Central Regional, hosted by Western Kentucky University. The MU golfer and 2009 BIG EAST Player of the Year is the top-seeded individual in the regional field. Van Sickle earned an at-large bid to compete at The Club at Olde Stone, May 14-16.

Van Sickle will play a practice round Wednesday at the par-72, 7,372-yard golf course. He will begin the 54-hole, three-round tournament Thursday morning when he tees off on hole one at 10:50 a.m. CST. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.

Van Sickle will be competing against the other four at-large individuals selected to compete in the Central Regional, which includes Sebastian MacLean of Xavier, Eastern Kentucky's Trey Bowling, Tyler Duncan of Purdue and Alabama State's John Montgomery.

Ranked among the top amateur players in the world, Van Sickle is one of a handful of favorites from the Central Regional to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship finals, May 26-30, in Toledo, Ohio.

However, only one individual from each of the six NCAA regional tournaments -- not already on one of the five advancing teams -- will earn a berth to the finals.

The 14 teams competing at this year's Central Regional are: top-seeded Washington, defending national champion UCLA, BIG EAST champion Louisville, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Mississippi, East Tennessee State, Duke, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay, Cleveland State and Bucknell.

According to Lance Ringler of Golfweek magazine, Van Sickle is one of four candidates at the Central Regional who should be considered for national player of the year. Other top players include Washington's Nick Taylor, Matt Hill of N.C. State and Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale.

This is Van Sickle's third NCAA tournament appearance. Van Sickle was a member of the 2008 Golden Eagles squad that captured the BIG EAST Championship title. His best finish in regional play came in 2007 when he earned an at-large berth as a sophomore and tied for 17th with a 9-over 225 (78-69-78). It was the first-ever NCAA regional appearance by a Marquette golfer.
