HARTFORD, Wis. -- Dustin Schwab and Ben Sieg teamed up to win the 2009 Wisconsin State Golf Association (WSGA) State Best Ball Championship, defeating the University of Wisconsin's Patrick Duffy and Tyler Obermueller in the final round of match play Sunday, 3 and 1, at Washington County Golf Course.
Duffy and Obermueller, the 36-hole stroke play medalists, took the early match lead when Duffy sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the second hole. The match was quickly back to all square after Schwab, who recently completed his golf career at Marquette, made eagle on the par-5 third hole.
Sieg, a junior to-be with the Golden Eagles, gave the duo their first lead with a 45-foot putt for birdie on the par-3 fourth hole.
Their lead would stay the same through the seventh hole as both teams made pars on Nos. 5 and 6 and birdies on No. 7. The shot of the day came on the par-4 eighth hole when Schwab spun a 54 degree wedge into the hole from 105 yards for eagle. That shot put his team 2-up heading into the ninth hole.
The teams would battle over the next eight holes, halving each hole, and the team of Schwab and Sieg would go into the par-5 seventeenth hole dormie. Both Obermueller and Sieg would hit their second shots onto the green and when Obermueller missed his eagle putt, his side conceded the hole to Schwab and Sieg. This concession gave them the 3 and 1 victory and the championship.
This is the third WSGA title for Schwab who captured the 2009 State Match Play Championship and the 2005 State Junior Boy’s Championship titles. It is the first WSGA title for Sieg.
