Marquette University Golf Adds Transfer Jack McKinney
June 28, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Jack McKinney has transferred to Marquette University and will be eligible to compete with the men's golf team beginning this fall, Golden Eagles head coach Steve Bailey announced Thursday.
McKinney played his freshman season at Maryville University in St. Louis, where he led the team in scoring average. He also set the school's single-round scoring record, and Aberdeen Golf Club course record, when he fired a 7-under-par 64 in the final round of the 2011 Maryville Fall Invitational in October.
"Jack has several traits that made him attractive to our program," said Bailey. "His strong character and work ethic are foremost, coupled with a passion for the game that is very contagious. Jack has proven at both the junior and collegiate level that he can play, and as we have seen with some of his scores, his good is really good."
McKinney, originally from Big Bend, Wis., and graduate of Marquette University High School, made a name for himself after winning the 2011 Wisconsin State Golf Association Junior Championship with a playoff victory last August at La Crosse Country Club. That performance followed a runner-up finish by McKinney at the Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship in June 2011.
He closed out his prep career at Marquette High by finishing second at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association 2011 Boys State Championship, leading the Hilltoppers to a third-place overall finish. McKinney was also co-captain of the 2010 Marquette High squad that placed second in the 2010 state tournament.
A three-time all-state selection, McKinney was twice named Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year. He helped Marquette High capture three conference championships and three sectional titles (including four regional championships) during his tenure. McKinney currently also holds a share of the Marquette High single-round scoring record (68).
"I wanted to be a part of the bright and special future that this golf program has in its sights," said McKinney. "Coach Bailey is a wonderful coach, and I could not be more excited to begin playing for him. Representing Marquette University well in the classroom and on the golf course has been my dream for a while, and I cannot wait to get started."
McKinney will join three incoming freshmen - Zach Gaugert (Waunakee, Wis.), Nick Nelson (Decorah, Iowa) and Patrick Sanchez (Mazatlan, Mexico) - on the Golden Eagles' 2012-13 roster in addition to the seven returning players.
