MU Trio Claims BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards
July 8, 2015
NEW YORK – Marquette University student-athletes Jordan Greenfield (men’s lacrosse), Patrick Sanchez (men’s golf) and Axel Sjoberg (men’s soccer) were honored Wednesday as the 2014-15 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners, recognizing academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Greenfield was the first graduate student to compete as part of the MU men’s lacrosse program and led the Golden Eagles in scoring during his lone season with a program-record 52 points. Greenfield, a 2015 All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team selection, is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration in MU's Graduate School of Management and helped MU to 10 victories in just its third season of competition.
Sanchez, who was named the 2015 BIG EAST player of the year and was the league's co-champion at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships in April, was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team and is a three-time all-league performer.
In 2014-15, Sanchez was Marquette's leading scorer and ranked fourth in the BIG EAST at 73.61 strokes/round.
Sjoberg is the third straight Marquette student-athlete to claim the honor for men’s soccer, following in the footsteps of former teammates Bryan Ciesiulka (2012-13) and Charlie Lyon (2013-14).
The Stockholm, Sweden, native started in all 63 matches he played in during his collegiate career at MU registering 11 goals, 31 points and 24 shots on goal. The 6-foot-7 defender redshirted his freshman year after breaking his foot, but returned for three seasons where he became a standout, earning national and BIG EAST accolades. He helped MU win its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship in 2013 to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament, which resulted in an opening game victory over Akron.
During his final season in Blue and Gold in 2014, Sjoberg started and played every minute of the season's 18 matches, where he recorded three assists and seven shots on goal. He was named to the 2014 NSCAA Men's University Division I Scholar All-American Third Team, was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, and a three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. He was selected by the Colorado Rapids with the 14th pick in the first round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and is currently in his rookie season with the club.
