Don't Call It a Comeback: Kretz Advances at APL Championship
July 16, 2008
Milwaukee - Marquette golfer Kelly Kretz survived another day thanks to a late rally in the first round of match play Wednesday and has advanced to the round of 32 in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship held this week at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. Kretz, who will be entering his sophomore year with the Golden Eagles this fall, surged from an early deficit and held on to defeat UCLA's Lucas Lee, 2-and-1. Lee was 3-up over Kretz after the first eight holes. Kretz battled back by shooting three-under par through the remaining 10 holes. He eventually took the lead by carding an eagle on the 603-yard, par 5 hole 15. In the round of 32, Kretz will tee off Thursday against Brian Locke at 6:36 a.m. CT. The winner advances to the round of 16, also scheduled for Thursday. Locke, a native of Los Angeles, will be a senior at Loyola Marymount. Kretz was one of 64 players to make the cut following back-to-back qualifying rounds, held Monday and Tuesday, in which he shot a one-over par 143 to place 26th overall. He earned a spot in the event by virtue of winning a local qualifying tournament at Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, Wis., June 7-8. Live scoring for the APL Championship is available here.
