GOLDEN EAGLES SHINE AT WISCONSIN STATE AMATEUR

Rising Marquette senior Pat Sanchez posted back-to-back rounds of even par 72 to finish in a tie for second place at the 114th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at Erin Hills Golf Course.

Sanchez was joined in the field by four other Marquette players who made the cut - Sanchez’s final round partner and MU classmate, Zach Gaugert, finished in a tie for fifth place after entering the final round in the top spot.

On the final hole, Sanchez had an opportunity to match Wisconsin sophomore Eddie Wadja at 5-over-par to force a playoff.  On the par-5, 660-yard 18th hole, Sanchez hit his approach shot to 10 feet left of the hole, needing a birdie putt to tie for the lead - his birdie attempt slid right of the hole and he finished in five.

Nick Nelson, who has a pair of amateur wins this summer at local U.S. Open qualifying and the WSGA Match Play Championship, climbed the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 12th.   Nelson was joined there by former teammate Brandon Cloete at 12-over-par - Cloete was one of four players under par (2-under) in the final round.  Freshman Charlie Maleki entered the final day tied in second place with Sanchez at 6-over-par, but finished in a tie for 20th place.  Junior Henry Klongland rounded out the Marquette contingent, finishing tied for 25th.

TOP-NOTCH TOURNAMENTS AHEAD

Sanchez and Nelson will join a field of 155 players in the field of the 2015 Western Amateur, Aug. 3-8 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.  Since 1899, the Western Amateur has featured the world’s elite amateur golfers and many of the best players in NCAA Division I.  Sanchez, the BIG EAST co-champion in 2015 and Nelson, an All-BIG EAST selection, will be in a stacked field that includes 2015 NCAA Champion and 2014 Erin Hills Intercollegiate medalist Bryson DeChambeau of SMU, and 2015 Open Championship Silver medalist Jordan Niebrugge, a Mequon native from Oklahoma State.

Gaugert will play in the 2015 U.S. Amateur Open, August 17-23 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.   Gaugert held the top qualifying spot from Mascoutin Golf Club in Berlin, Wis. in play from early July.  BIG EAST television partners FOX Sports 1 and FOX will carry all five days of the U.S. Amateur Open.
