Golf Notebook: Successful summer continues for Golden Eagles

MILWAUKEE -- Marquette golfers have been fine-tuning their skills through a rigorous summer competition schedule, and it seems the successes of the 2007-08 season have carried over. This past weekend Mike Van Sickle finished third at the prestigious Porter Cup in Lewiston, N.Y., while Kelly Kretz placed third at the Wisconsin State Golf Association (WSGA) State Amateur in Beaver Dam, Wis. Van Sickle shot a scorching 5-under par 275 (68-71-68-68) at Niagara Falls Country Club, but was unable to catch Georgia's Adam Mitchell (270), who carded a low-round 62 on the opening day of the tournament, and UAB's Zack Sucher (273). Van Sickle, who will be entering his senior year with the Golden Eagles this fall, improved his Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking to No. 17 overall, No. 7 among golfers in the United States. Monday, July 28 marks the beginning of the Pennsylvania state Amateur Championship, where Van Sickle hopes to defend his title. The event will be played on the Old Course at Saucon Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. and runs July 28-30. Van Sickle teed off Monday at noon (CT). At the WSGA, Kretz held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round at Old Hickory Golf Club, but carded a 78 on the last day (July 24) to finish at even-par 288 (71-70-69-78). Kretz, who will be a sophomore, was still Marquette's top finisher with senior Dustin Schwab finishing in a tie for sixth place at 292 (72-77-74-69). Three other Golden Eagles placed in the top 20 -- junior Mike McDonald (t-14th), sophomore Ben Sieg (t-17th) and junior Matt Haase (t-19th). Related Links
