SUGAR GROVE, Illinois - The Marquette University men's golf team opens up a new season this weekend when they make the short trip to Illinois and Rich Harvest Farms to compete in the Northern Intercollegiate hosted by Northern Illinois University beginning with first-round action on Friday, Sept. 5.

The 54-hole tournament will take place over three days with the final round scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7.

"It's a tough course at Rich Harvest Farms. It was a regional site and it has been a couple of times and so the scoring average has always been quite high. So we wanted to play some similar golf courses, and we did that," said head coach Steve Bailey. "Just getting our guys in that mentality of playing a difficult golf course was the biggest emphasis."

The Golden Eagles will begin the 2014-2015 campaign with freshman Trevor Thomas joining returners Pat Sanchez, Brandon Cloete, Nick Nelson and Zach Gaugert in the lineup. Sophomore Henry Klongland will compete in the event as an individual.

The Golden Eagles will look to build off successful individual summers, which included U.S. Amateur appearances by Nelson and Cloete. Nelson hopes to use the experience he gained over the summer as a solid foundation for the upcoming season.

"The more you play at a higher level, the more you get used to the competition," Nelson said. "As you get older, you know what to expect and you have to hit one shot at a time no matter what."

Along with a successful summer, Marquette hopes to continue late-season success from last year which included a second-place finish in the BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship and also featured a strong performance from Cloete, who finished tied for fourth, and Sanchez, a two-time All-BIG EAST performer.
