Van Sickle Named Golfweek Preseason All-American
Sept. 6, 2008
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette senior Mike Van Sickle has already collected his first major award of the 2008-09 men's golf season prior to the team's first event. Van Sickle was one of 10 players named to Golfweek's Preseason All-America team this week. The recognition aligns Van Sickle with some of the biggest names in collegiate golf.
"It's a big accomplishment," said Van Sickle. "It's really difficult to be recognized if you don't play for one of the big schools, so it means I'm doing something right and I just hope to have a good season here coming up."
Van Sickle saw his World Amateur Ranking steadily climb throughout the summer. His success -- which included winning both the Pennsylvania state Amateur and Open Championships -- was the exclamation point Van Sickle needed on a record-breaking junior season for the Blue and Gold in 2007-08.
His 71.39 scoring average broke his own single-season mark, while Van Sickle's six collegiate victories already is the most-ever for a Marquette player. Additionally, Van Sickle's 153 birdies last season ranked second among all NCAA Division I golfers and helped him garner Honorable mention All-America honors.
"He can really bomb it," Golfweek wrote about Van Sickle. "But he's learning it takes more than length for success. he has worked hard on his short game, and it shows with his finishes in top-tier events this summer. Look for him to close out his college career in impressive fashion."
