WAYZATA, Minn. -- The Marquette University men's golf team opens the 2010-11 season at the 2010 Gopher Invitational, Sept. 12-13, under the direction of first-year head coach Steve Bailey.

Hosted by the University of Minnesota, 11 schools will compete in this year's tournament to be held at the par-72, 7,020-yard Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn.

Teams will play a practice round Saturday followed by 36 holes of competition on Sunday. The opening round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. CT, and the tournament concludes Monday with the final round scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m.

Live scoring will be available for all three rounds at

MU's lineup will feature seniors Kelly Kretz and Ben Sieg, junior Matt Haas, sophomore Ryan Prickette and newcomer Corey Konieczki. Kretz, Sieg and Konieczki were the automatic qualifiers by virtue of team-qualifying events. Freshman Michael Motz also made the trip while junior Curtis McCormac is currently out with injury.

With a team score of 887, Marquette tied for sixth place at the 2008 Gopher Invitational led by medalist Mike Van Sickle, who won the individual title by two strokes at 3-under-par 213. Sieg tied for 36th place individually, highlighted by an even-par 72 during the first-round of play in which the then-sophomore carded a hole-in-one on the par-3 hole four.

This year's event marks the first of five fall tournaments for Bailey's squad. MU will compete in the Cardinal Collegiate (Sept. 20-21) in Simpsonville, Ky. and the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 26-27) in Glenview, Ill., later this month. The Golden Eagles then travel to California back-to-back weekends with the St. Mary's Invitational (Oct. 25-26) and Pacific Invitational (Nov. 1-3).

Kelly Kretz earned All-BIG EAST recognition after finishing tied for third place at the league championship at Innisbrook's famed Copperhead Golf Course. Kretz was MU's top finisher in five of the team's nine events, including three top-10s.

The Golden Eagles recorded their best team finishes by placing third at the Xavier Invitational and The Firestone Invitational in back-to-back fashion early last fall.

This year's Gopher Invitational features schools from eight different collegiate conferences. Southern Methodist is the returning champion. SMU posted a tournament-record score of 9-under-par 855 in winning last year's team trophy.
