Marquette Golfers Head to Illinois for Windon Memorial Classic

GLENVIEW, Ill. -- North Shore Country Club will be the site of this year's Windon Memorial Classic where Marquette University will play its opening rounds Sunday, Sept. 26, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT.

Teams are scheduled to play 36 continuous holes on Sunday followed by a final round on Monday, Sept. 27, at the par-71, 7,067-yard golf course. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.

Marquette head coach Steve Bailey's five-man lineup will consist of seniors Kelly Kretz and Ben Sieg, junior Matt Haase, and sophomore Ryan Prickette, along with freshman Corey Konieczki, an Illinois native (Rockford, Ill.).

This year's event holds true to its tradition by showcasing a highly competitive field. A total of 17 teams will compete for the trophy. California, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Kent State, Long Beach State, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Princeton, Purdue, Tennessee, Tulsa, UC Davis, in addition to tournament host Northwestern and the Golden Eagles, round out this year's field.

Recent Marquette graduate Mike Van Sickle won here in 2007. Past champions also include 2010 Ryder Cup participants Luke Donald and Hunter Mahan. Mahan's U.S. teammate Tiger Woods was a runner-up in 1995 behind Florida's Josh McCumber.

Schools played a practice round at the course on Saturday. Temperatures during the tournament are forecast in the mid-60s with moderate winds and a chance of rain overnight Sunday.

The Windon Memorial Classic has been held 13 times since 1993 at multiple venues in the Chicagoland area. North Shore CC opened in 1917 and hosted the 1933 U.S. Open.

ABOUT THE COURSE
North Shore Country Club is a par-71 track that stretches 7,067 yards. It opened in 1917 and was designed by Harry Colt. It hosted the 1933 U.S. Open and has also held a Western Open and a U.S. Men's Amateur Championship twice.

ABOUT THE FIELD
Seven teams are currently ranked among the top 35 in the nation in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, which include: Kent State (3), Ohio State (16), Minnesota (22), Northwestern (28), Tulsa (30), Indiana (31) and Coastal Carolina (32). Eight schools participated in an NCAA men's golf regional last year.
