After earning event medalist honors for the first time in his career, Marquette junior Austin Kendziorski was named BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week by the conference office on Thursday.
Kendziorski shared the top spot at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills with a 3-under-par 213 (67-72-74) and led the Golden Eagles to a third place finish at the site of the 2017 US Open.
He held the top spot from start to finish and shot an opening round 67 (5-under-par), his fourth sub 70 round of the season. Kendziorski shot par or better on 34 of the first 36 holes, and then made a needed birdie putt on the 54th hole of the tournament to claim back a share of the lead - he split medalist honors with Florida State's Harry Ellis, the defending British Amateur champion.
The Marquette Intercollegiate field featured three ranked teams, including No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 22 Marquette and No. 24 Florida State, and four of the world's top 100 amateur players.
Entering the weekend’s Windon Memorial Classic, Kendziorski is shooting a team-low 70.22 stroke average (-1.78 vs. par) - he rates 24th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Men’s Collegiate rankings and 40th in the nation in Golfstat’s rankings.
