NEW YORK — Coming off a week when he posted his highest career event finish, fifth at the Northern Intercollegiate, Marquette sophomore Oliver Farrell was named BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday.
It’s the third straight week a Marquette player to earn BIG EAST honors - Farrell picked up the plaudit for the first time on Sept. 29 and Matt Murlick was honored on Oct. 5.
Farrell, a native of Worcestershire, England, shot an even par 213 (70-74-69) and led the Golden Eagles to the third place spot at the Northern Intercollegiate, hosted by Northern Illinois at Beverly Country Club in Chicago. As a team, MU played all three rounds with No. 1 (GCAA, Golfweek rankings) Illinois, which won the event and had five of the top seven finishers. On a weekend where only five of 71 players finished with par or better overall scores, Farrell posted 13 birdies, second-most in the field.
The Northern Intercollegiate marked the third time in four events this season that Farrell was Marquette’s best overall finisher in an event and the seventh time in 13 career collegiate tournaments.
Farrell is Marquette’s low scorer at 72.17 strokes per round, 0.92 versus par. He has six par or better rounds this season and has shot even par in two tournaments (Badger Invitational, Northern Intercollegiate).
