Lacrosse tops Michigan, 15-14, in first scrimmage
Jan. 21, 2017
ANN ARBOR, Michigan - No. 18 Marquette kicked off its spring campaign with a 15-14 victory over Michigan in its exhibition opener on Saturday afternoon at Oosterbaan Field House.
Sophomore attackman Brent Noseworth scored a game-high five goals for the Wolverines.
The Golden Eagles trailed 12-11 entering the fourth quarter, but put up the first four goals of the frame on McNamara's tallies and markers from Jack Zerrillo and DeMichiei. U of M was able to score two late goals to pull things within one, but MU held on for the final 15 seconds for the win.
Marquette spotted the Wolverines a 5-0 lead to start the game before closing the first quarter with four goals over the final four minutes. Redshirt freshman Josh Williamson put Marquette on the board first at the 3:56 mark before Richard, a sophomore long-stick midfielder, posted a transition goal just over a minute later. Williamson, who along with redshirt sophomore LSM Jordan McKenzie suffered season-ending injuries in last year's scrimmage in Ann Arbor, also added an assist Saturday in the fourth quarter.
Thomson's four-goal day continued his solid play from late in 2016 when he recorded 12 of his 19 goals in the final four games of the season against ranked opponents.
Richard added a physical presence to Marquette's wing play and scored on a pair of big rips while also adding an assist on Griffin Connor's second period tally. He was MU's primary LSM, while Brendon Connolly and Jordan McKenzie also saw time against U of M. Connor took over Jacob Richard's spot as MU's top short-stick defensive midfielder and received help from fellow D-mids Colin Riehl and Ted Goltzman.
Five of Marquette's six starters on attack and in the first midfield from 2016 were on the field Saturday, while three new faces played close defense with freshman Nick Grill, sophomore transfer Jackson Ehlert and senior Ryan Geller standing in front of returning All-BIG EAST goalie Cole Blazer.
The Golden Eagles reserves also competed against Denison following the scrimmage with the Wolverines and fell 12-6.
