PONTIAC, Michigan – Freshman Anthony Orsini scored four goals and Jack Zerrillo notched his first career hat trick to lead the No. 19/rv Marquette University men’s lacrosse team past Detroit Mercy, 13-6, on Saturday afternoon at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac, Michigan.

The Golden Eagles (2-0), who will return to the venue next weekend to take on No. 4/5 Ohio State and Bellarmine, out-shot the Titans 45-21 and picked up 33 ground balls to UDM’s 18.

Orsini, who scored a pair of goals in his collegiate debut last weekend, fired 11 shots and was joined up front by a pair of goals and an assist from John Wagner, who played in high school at the nearby Cranbrook-Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills.

Marquette led 7-3 at the half, paced by a hat trick from Orsini, while Tommy von den Benken and Zerrillo each scored their first goals of the year before the break.

Peter Henkhaus got the Golden Eagles on the board first with 12:04 remaining in the opening quarter on a righty dodge down the alley and Orsini added his first two in the next three minutes. After UDM pulled things within a goal, 3-2, MU reeled off seven of the next eight goals for a commanding 10-3 edge midway through the third.

Faceoff specialist Zachary Melillo went 15-of-20 at the dot for Marquette and picked up eight ground balls in the victory.

Detroit falls to 1-3 with the loss and will face Bellarmine on Friday afternoon.
