RICHMOND, Virginia - The Marquette University men's lacrosse team assisted on five of its seven goals and stymied the Richmond offense in a 7-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.

Junior midfielder Ryan McNamara and freshman John Wagner each scored a pair of goals in the win for the Golden Eagles (2-0), while Conor Gately, Kyle Whitlow and Joe Dunn each found the back of the net once.

The victory is Marquette's second in as many tries against the Spiders (3-1) and the two goals are the fewest it has ever allowed to any opponent.

Jimmy Danaher made eight saves between the pipes, while a big effort was turned in from the entire defensive unit. Graduate students B.J. Grill and Liam Byrnes each caused three turnovers, while Grill picked up five ground balls and Byrnes three.

Richmond received its two goals from Dan Ginestro and Saturday's contest was the first time in the last 27 games that attackman Mitch Goldberg was held without a point.

Marquette capitalized on a pair of extra man opportunities in the first quarter and took a 3-0 lead after one half of play. Wagner got the scoring started at 5:02 of the opening frame with his first career goal on a shot from the right side of the cage on a Whitlow feed. With the assist of Wagner's tally, Whitlow moved into second place all by himself in MU history behind Gately with 90 career points.

Whitlow tacked on MU's second EMO goal of the afternoon in the first quarter and McNamara continued his hot start to the season in the second, firing one past Richmond goalie Benny Pugh from 15 yards out with 6:18 remaining before the half.

Marquette built a 5-0 lead coming out of the break with the day's second tallies for both Wagner and McNamara.

The Spiders were able to get on the board on an EMO with 8:13 remaining in the third quarter as Teddy Hatfield found Dan Ginestro in front of the MU net. The pair also connected on UR's final goal.

The last time MU had held its opponent scoreless through the opening quarter was a 12-10 win at Jacksonville on March 6, 2015.

The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Marquette will face host Ohio State on Friday, March 4 at 5 p.m. Central time and will take on Detroit at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 6.
