Marquette upsets No. 4/6 Ohio State in OT, 8-7
March 2, 2018
PONTIAC, Michigan - John Wagner scored with 1:18 remaining in overtime to push the No. 18/19 Marquette University men's lacrosse team past No. 4/6 Ohio State, 8-7, on Friday evening in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac, Michigan.
Wagner's right-handed heroics lifted the Golden Eagles to a perfect 3-0 mark on the season and 4-9 all-time against top-five opponents in the USILA top-20 poll. It also pushes MU's record in one-goal games to 18-6 and to 32-1 when entering the fourth quarter with the lead.
The Golden Eagles (3-0) led by two goals, 7-5, entering the fourth quarter, but the Buckeyes were able to tie things midway through the final frame with the fourth's only goals. MU had the ball with under 30 seconds left in regulation but was unable to get off a final shot.
Face-off specialist Zachary Melillo, who did not play in last year's loss to OSU in Milwaukee, won the opening face-off of overtime and each team was able to get a shot off before MU's final possession.
Wagner worked the ball towards the middle of the field before switching hands and firing a shot past OSU goalie Matthew Smidt for the game winner. The 2015 Michigan High School Player of the Year, who played seven miles from Wisner Stadium at the Cranbrook-Kingswood School, capped the game with his second game winner after scoring with less than 10 seconds left in the season opener against Jacksonville on Feb. 17.
All-American Ohio State sophomore Tre Leclaire did not record a point as the Buckeyes dropped their first game of the season to fall to 4-1.
The Buckeyes put up two early goals in the first four minutes of regulation and held a 2-0 lead late into the frame. Sophomore Peter Henkhaus put the Golden Eagles on the board at the 3:49 mark and Josh Williamson tallied his first of the year to tie things up.
Ohio State took a 4-2 lead to start the second quarter before MU reeled off five of the next six goals for a 7-5 edge heading into the fourth.
Senior goalie Cole Blazer had seven saves for MU.
The Golden Eagles resume play in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic against Bellarmine on Sunday, March 4 at 10 a.m. CT.
