MILWAUKEE – No. 20/17 Ohio State surged past the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team, 12-6, with a dominant second half in MU’s inaugural game in the new seasonal dome at Valley Fields on Friday evening.
Junior goaltender Cole Blazer set a new program record with 18 saves on the evening and Tanner Thomson recorded a first-half hat trick, but it was not enough to overcome an MU scoring drought that lasted 31:08.
Tre Leclaire posted a hat trick of his own for the Buckeyes (5-0), who gained their first lead of the game on Austin Shanks’ second goal of the night at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter and never surrendered the lead once again. Senior Eric Fannell also played an integral role for OSU, potting two goals in addition to two helpers.
Ohio State was able to dictate play throughout the contest, and outshot the Golden Eagles by a wide, 42-25 margin. OSU also proved to be aggressors in the face-off X, winning 16 of the evening’s 22 draws.
After a first half of end-to-end action, the two sides entered the halftime break deadlocked at 5-5. Blazer made 10 saves for the Blue and Gold in the opening half, while Thomson’s trio of tallies paced the MU offense.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) resume action in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic on Sunday, March 5 at 3 p.m. against Detroit Mercy.
