COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ryan McNamara added to his team-leading goal total with four tallies, but the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team could not overcome a late four-goal deficit, falling 12-8 at Ohio State on Friday evening.

McNamara scored three of his four goals in the second half for the Golden Eagles (2-1), while senior attackman Conor Gately scored a pair for MU.

Carter Brown recorded a hat trick for the Buckeyes (4-1) and OSU also received two goals apiece from JT Blubaugh and Austin Shanks.

Ohio State was able to get the first two goals of the game and held a 6-4 lead at halftime in Columbus. Austin Shanks, who notched a hat trick against MU last season during his time at Bellarmine, got the Buckeyes on the board first at the 7:04 mark of the first. Kyle Whitlow tallied MU’s first goal on its second extra man opportunity of the game with 2:19 remaining and Gately knotted things 2-2 with five seconds to play in the first.

OSU scored the first three goals of the second to build a three-goal lead, but goals from McNamara and Dunn right before the half had MU down one at the break.

McNamara scored both Marquette third quarter goals and pulled the Golden Eagles within a pair entering the final frame.

Gately scored to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, with 12:45 left in the final stanza before OSU was able to build the lead back up to four goals.

The Golden Eagles will resume action at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 6 against Detroit (0-4).
