March 4, 2018
PONTIAC, Michigan – The No. 18/19 Marquette dropped its first double overtime game to Bellarmine, 7-6, on Sunday in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic at Wisner Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) built a three-goal edge, 4-1, midway through the second quarter but were outscored by the Knights, 5-2, over the final 37:58 of regulation. Sophomore Ryan Fazio gave MU the 4-1 lead on the only extra-man goal of the day for Marquette, which scored on just one of six opportunities with the man advantage.
Marquette never trailed in regulation and took a 5-4 lead into the game’s final quarter, but Bellarmine rallied to tie things at 5-5 at the 14:01 mark and again at 6-6 with 4:42 to play.
Freshman attackman Anthony Orsini had a pair of looks in extra time for the Golden Eagles that he couldn’t convert. The first was low shot that was saved by BU goalie John Hulsman late in the first overtime and a second that hit the side of the cage midway through the second session.
After a BU clear and timeout, Brian Wall scored his second of the afternoon to give the Knights the game winner.
Hulsman made 13 saves for Bellarmine (2-4), while Cole Blazer posted seven for the Golden Eagles. Hulsman kept BU in the game early with six first quarter stops.
Senior Zachary Melillo and Marquette won 12-of-16 faceoffs, but Bellarmine won the final two of regulation during its comeback.
The Golden Eagles return to Milwaukee to host Robert Morris on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
