Marquette falls at Villanova in OT, 10-9

VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania - Christian Cuccinello scored his fifth goal of the game with 1:31 remaining in overtime as Villanova topped the Marquette University men's lacrosse team, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Seniors Joe Dunn and Kyran Clarke each scored twice for the Golden Eagles (5-3, 1-1 BIG EAST), who began the game with a 3-0 lead and led 7-5 at the half. Classmate Andy DeMichiei posted a team-best four points with a goal and three assists and Zachary Melillo won 12-of-21 at the face-off dot.
Cuccinello scored the first two goals for the Wildcats (6-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) to pull them out of a 3-0 hole, and tallied at least one in four of the game's five periods. VU posted a slim 36-35 edge in shots and goalie Nick Testa made 11 saves on the day.
Marquette, which drops the first game in program history when leading after three periods of action (29-1), had the final possession of regulation and the first of overtime, but could not capitalize for the win. MU's final goal of the game came on Ryan McNamara's 10th of the year with 2:28 left in the third to put MU up 9-7.
Saturday marked the third-straight one-goal decision for Marquette, which now falls to 2-1 on the year and 15-5 all-time in one-goal games.
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, April 8 in Milwaukee against St. John's at 1 p.m. Central time.
