DeMichiei's Seven Goals Push Marquette past St. John's, 11-7
April 9, 2016
QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Andy DeMichiei potted a program-record seven goals to lead the Marquette University men's lacrosse team over St. John's, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at a rainy DaSilva Memorial Field.
"I thought it was a great team win and I challenged our guys at halftime to step up and take control of the moment. They did," Marquette head coach Joe Amplo said. "I just so proud of the guys who haven't been as productive. Andy DeMichiei having seven goals today - that just speaks to what this team is. Jimmy Danaher coming in in relief of Cole - that speaks to what we are as a team. It's about the name on their chest, not about what you do individually. It's about what we are as a program and that's what allowed us to be successful today. Those guys really want to play for Marquette."
DeMichiei, who entered the day with 12 goals in 39 career games, helped Marquette blow past the Red Storm in the second half by scoring the first three goals of the third quarter.
"Andy was able to be successful because he just did his job," Amplo said. "He didn't push and the other guys around him did their job. He was the benefactor of other guys making good plays. He made good shots. He told me on Sunday night/Monday morning in an email that he was going to be more productive, I'm going to shoot and that's going to be my difference-maker this week. He benefitted from all that hard work and believing in himself."
The Golden Eagles (8-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) held St. John's scoreless in the third and only conceded one fourth-period goal. Leading scorer Ryan McNamara posted four points on two goals and a pair of assists, while fellow junior Kyran Clarke scored and assisted a McNamara goal.
Eric DeJohn's two goals led the Red Storm (1-10, 0-2 BIG EAST), which held a 37-26 edge in shots for the afternoon.
Marquette stormed out of a 6-4 halftime deficit to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter. DeMichiei scored the first three goals of the half before McNamara scored his team-leading 27th goal to give MU its two-goal cushion with just over 10 minutes to play in the frame.
The Red Storm struck first on the day as DeJohn scored almost immediately after SJU took the opening faceoff. Following DeJohn's goal, DeMichiei goals sandwiched a Tanner Thomson tally as the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead.
St. John's would go on to reel off five-straight goals before Clarke answered for MU with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.
Sophomore Zachary Melillo went 13-of-21 at the faceoff X and now has an MU single-season record 125 faceoff victories this year.
The Golden Eagles will return to action at No. 1 Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 13 at Arlotta Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana. The game will be broadcast live on WatchESPN.
