MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 14/15 Notre Dame, 7-6, after the Fighting Irish recorded back-to-back goals within the final 42 seconds of regulation at Valley Fields on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Eagles (5-5) were led by John Wagner with a pair of goals, followed by Connor McClelland, Jack Zerrillo, Griffin Fleming and Luke Anderson with a goal each.

Zachary Melillo gave Marquette the edge at the dot, winning 12-of-15 face-offs and picking up five ground balls.

Notre Dame (6-4) scored the opening goal on an extra-man opportunity before MU closed out the first stanza with a 3-1 lead. Wagner responded a minute after Willetts’ first tally with his 20th goal of the season, while McClelland and Zerrillo added goals to close out the first period.

Marquette owned a 4-3 lead going into the half after Melillo won 7-of-8 first half face-offs. The Fighting Irish scored a pair of goals in the third and held Marquette scoreless for over 25 minutes of action into the fourth quarter.

Wagner’s second tally of the game gave the Golden Eagles a narrow one-goal lead, 6-5, with 7:24 remaining in regulation, but Notre Dame fought back with just under a minute to play. Bryan Costabile scored for ND with 42 seconds remaining to tie things up and Ryder Garnsey tallied his only goal of the game with 15 seconds left for the winner.

The Golden Eagles won the final face off thanks to a ground ball from Noah Richard, but the clock ran out before Marquette was able to produce a shot.

Seven different players scored for the Irish, who improve to 7-0 all-time against Marquette. It’s the third consecutive regular season contest in the series to have been decided by just a single goal.

The Golden Eagles will host their final home game of the regular season against Providence on Saturday, April 14 at Valley Fields. In addition to “Senior Day” festivities in the stadium prior to face off, Marquette will host its inaugural “Rally at the Valley” at the adjacent Shimek Memorial Track at Noon Central time. Fans at the pregame block party, which features live music, food trucks and a beer garden, will receive complementary admission to the 2 p.m. Central time contest as capacity allows.
