Marquette falls to No. 4 Duke, 11-7, at home

MILWAUKEE – Sporting lime green in support of the HEADstrong Foundation, the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 4 Duke, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields in the HEAD Coaches Classic.
The Golden Eagles (6-6) were led in scoring by Joe Dunn’s two goals, followed by Tanner Thomson, Ryan McNamara, Andy DeMichiei and Grant Preisler with a goal apiece. Thomson also notched a pair of assists for a team-high three points.
Marquette jumped to a 1-0 lead as McNamara scored in the first five minutes of play. The Blue Devils (11-3) responded with a trio of goals, spearheaded by Sean Lowrie. Lowrie was one of three Duke players with two goals on the day while Justin Guterding led the way with three goals on five shots.
Marquette’s strongest attempt at a rally came in the third frame when the team went on a 3-0 run led by the trio of seniors DeMichiei, Dunn and Preisler. The Preisler goal at the 8:46 mark of the third gave the Golden Eagles their first lead since the start of the game, but Duke responded with the next three goals to regain the lead.
The Blue Devils held the advantage at the faceoff X with Kyle Rowe going 12-of-21 while Marquette’s Zach Melillo went 10-of-22 on the game. Rowe won 4-of-5 faceoffs in the pivotal fourth frame.
Marquette goalie Cole Blazer made 13 saves, an even mark with Duke goalie Danny Fowler.
Marquette falls to 0-5 all-time against Duke.
The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields to host No. 3 Denver on Saturday, April 29 for the BIG EAST Conference regular season finale at 3:30 p.m. Central time. The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network and MU will honor its 11-player senior class with a pre-game ceremony.
