No. 16 Marquette Drops 18-11 Decision to No. 5 Denver

WAUWATOSA, Wis. -- The No. 16 Marquette University men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 5 Denver Pioneers, 18-11, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Hart Park.
After today's result, the Golden Eagles will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 Georgetown in the BIG EAST semifinals on Thursday, April 30. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. Central time at Villanova Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (10-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) were paced offensively by Jordan Greenfield and Kyle Whitlow who each notched hat tricks. Greenfield also dished out a pair of assists in his final game at Hart Park. Sophomore Kyran Clarke notched two goals and classmate Ryan McNamara had three assists.
Senior attackman Wesley Berg led Denver (11-2, 5-0 BIG EAST) by scoring four goals, notching six ground balls and adding an assist. Teammate Connor Cannizzaro added a trio of goals and an assist. The Pioneer's faceoff specialist, Trevor Baptiste, won 18-of-26 opportunities and added a game-high 13 ground balls.
After trailing 13-4 at the half, the Golden Eagles tightened the reigns defensively in the second half and were able to find more opportunities on the offensive end in the game's final 30 minutes. MU outscored its counterpart 7-5 in the second half, and also outshot DU 19-14 in the second stanza.
Denver led 5-1 after the first quarter, and carried its momentum into the second quarter scoring the period's first eight goals to expand the lead to 13-1. The Pioneers ripped off a 10-0 run during the early stages of the matchup.
The Golden Eagles responded with a 3-0 scoring run to close the half. Gately, Greenfield and Whitlow all scored goals during this span to cut the deficit to single digits.
The Pioneers dominated time of possession in the first half and outshot MU 22-11 in the game's first 30 minutes of action. The Pioneers were able to convert 14-of-19 first-half faceoff attempts and picked up 24 groundballs opposed to MU's seven.
K.C. Kennedy, Travis Schelhorn, Pat Townsend, Logan Tousaw and Jordan Greenfield were all honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony. Townsend, Tousaw and Greenfield are all transfers from other institutions, while Kennedy and Schelhorn have been with the MU program since its inception.
