Lacrosse drops 16-8 decision to No. 2 Denver

MILWAUKEE ­– The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 2 Denver, 16-8, on Saturday afternoon to close regular season action on Senior Day at a rainy Valley Fields.

Senior Joe Dunn led the Golden Eagles (6-7, 2-3 BIG EAST) with a hat trick, sophomore John Wagner added a pair of tallies and Andy DiMichiei, Ryan McNamara and Tanner Thomson each chipped in one.

For the Pioneers (11-2, 5-0), Ethan Walker and Colton Jackson each poured in four goals and Connor Cannizzaro had a hat trick. Walker also added three assists for a game-high seven points.

The Golden Eagles opened scoring when Wagner capitalized on a man-up opportunity early in the first quarter. The Pioneers answered by scoring 10 of the next 13 goals in the first half, led by a trio of goals from Walker and a six-goal second quarter.

A late second quarter Denver goal gave them a 10-4 halftime advantage and Marquette never regained the lead after its opening goal. All-American Trevor Baptiste displayed his talent at the faceoff dot for Denver, going 18-of-26 over the course of the game and goalie Alex Ready stopped 12 shots.

The third quarter began with a goal from Dunn, but a second-half hat trick for Jackson allowed the Pioneers to maintain their lead. Denver took its largest lead with a Cannizzaro goal in the fourth quarter, but Marquette strung together a pair of late-game tallies from DeMichiei and McNamara.

Marquette honored its 11 seniors in a pregame ceremony on the field with MU president Dr. Michael R. Lovell and athletics director Bill Scholl. MU’s senior class includes Jimmy DanaherRyan McNamara, Grant Preisler, Griffin Connor, Kyran Clarke, Robbie Pisano, Ryan Geller, Nicholas Eufrasio, Andy DeMichiei, Noah Joseph and Joe Dunn.

The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles will face top-seed Denver again on Thursday, May 4 in the semifinals of the BIG EAST tournament in Providence.
