Preseason Coaches' Poll

PERRY, New York – The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team is ranked 18th in the USILA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced on Monday morning.

The reigning BIG EAST Conference tournament champion, which is ranked in the preseason poll for the first time in program history, has recorded double digit wins in each of the last two seasons and set a new best of 11 overall victories in 2016.

Seven of 10 starters return for Marquette in 2017, led by USILA All-American attackman Ryan McNamara who scored a program-record 40 goals a season ago. All-BIG EAST goalie Cole Blazer and faceoff specialist Zachary Melillo are back to solidify the middle of the field, while midfielders Tanner Thomson (All-BIG EAST Tournament Team) and Andy DeMichiei look to continue their late-season ascension as offensive lynchpins.

The Golden Eagles ended last year ranked 11th in the USILA Coaches Poll and 13th in the media poll. Marquette also hosted its first NCAA tournament game in May as the national No. 6 seed, falling to eventual NCAA Champion North Carolina by one goal in the NCAA First Round.

Five opponents on MU’s 2017 schedule are also ranked, led by fellow BIG EAST rival Denver at No. 3. Nonconference foes Notre Dame (No. 4) and Duke (No. 7) are also in the top 10, while Ohio State (No. 17) and Air Force (No. 19) bookend the Golden Eagles.

Villanova, Richmond and Georgetown are also receiving votes.
