Lacrosse scrimmages Michigan and Denison on Saturday
Jan. 19, 2017
MILWAUKEE - The No. 18 Marquette University men's lacrosse team begins the 2017 spring semester with a pair of scrimmages against Michigan and Denison at Oosterbaan Field House in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The Golden Eagles will play a full scrimmage against Michigan at noon Central time on Saturday, and conclude the day by playing three quarters against Denison.
Michigan is a familiar foe in exhibition action as Marquette and the Wolverines have squared off in each of MU's five seasons of existence. Like Marquette, U of M is a fairly young program, entering only its sixth year of Division I competition. The Wolverines finished 2016 with a 3-10 record and were 0-5 in Big Ten play.
Denison enters the scrimmage as the No. 14 team in Inside Lacrosse's Division III preseason Face-Off Yearbook, and finished its 2016 campaign with an 18-2 record. The Big Red fell to Salisbury in the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Division III tournament by a single goal.
Marquette, the reigning BIG EAST Conference tournament champion, has recorded double digit wins in each of the last two seasons and set a new best of 11 overall victories in 2016.
The Golden Eagles, who return seven of 10 starters, including USILA All-American Ryan McNamara, ended last year ranked 11th in the USILA Coaches Poll and 13th in the media poll. Marquette also hosted its first NCAA tournament game as the national No. 6 seed, falling to eventual NCAA Champion North Carolina by one goal in the NCAA First Round.
Following the scrimmages in the Great Lakes State, MU will have the following week free from intercollegiate action before welcoming High Point to Milwaukee for a Friday, Feb. 3 scrimmage at Valley Fields.
