BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – The No. 15 Marquette University men’s lacrosse team was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Conference in its annual preseason survey of the league’s head coaches, while seniors Cole Blazer and Zachary Melillo, along with sophomore Nick Grill are All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selections.

The Golden Eagles became the first No. 4 seed to claim the league’s postseason tournament last season and have won each of the last two conference playoffs and the accompanying NCAA tournament berths.

Grill, a unanimous choice and All-BIG EAST Second Team selection as a true freshman, started all 16 games at close defense in 2017, picking up 15 ground balls and causing nine turnovers. The Bridgewater, New Jersey native served as the primary cover on the opposition’s top offensive player and led a defensive unit that ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense for most of the regular season.

Blazer was on last year’s All-BIG EAST Second Team and was the Most Outstanding Player at the 2017 BIG EAST Championship. He ranked 18th nationally in goals against average (9.17) and 26th in save percentage (.521).

Melillo has been an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in each of his two seasons since transferring to Marquette and was instrumental in both of MU’s runs to league crowns and NCAA appearances. The faceoff specialist became MU’s all-time faceoff leader after just one season and owns a career mark of 333-of-614 at the dot (.542).

MU’s spring begins with three road scrimmages before regular season action starts with the home opener against Jacksonville on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Valley Fields. MU will play its spring exhibitions at Cleveland State (Jan. 27), Johns Hopkins (Feb. 3) and Penn (Feb. 10).

The Golden Eagles own an all-time mark of 13-8 (.619) in BIG EAST regular season action in their four years of league play.
