MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's lacrosse team opens its preseason slate with a scrimmage at Cleveland State on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Krenzler Dome in Cleveland at 10 a.m. Central time. MU will also play a scrimmage against NCAA Division III Wittenberg following the CSU game.
The Golden Eagles enter the 2018 campaign ranked 15th in the USILA Coaches' Preseason Poll after consecutive BIG EAST Tournament titles and NCAA Championship appearances. They were selected to finish fourth in the league's annual preseason coaches' poll, while Nick Grill, Cole Blazer and Zachary Melillo were named to the all-preseason team on Wednesday.
The matchup between the MU program entering its sixth season and the CSU squad entering its second, is the first for the two schools. Since Marquette will face Michigan in regular season action on March 17, MU's usual early scrimmage against the Wolverines was replaced by the matchup with the Vikings.
In their inaugural season, CSU turned in a 5-9 record and battled several ranked teams including No. 7/10 Duke, No. 1 Denver, No. 16 Ohio State and No. 14/12 Virginia. Cleveland State returns sophomore goaltender Caleb Espinoza who finished his rookie season with 176 saves and a .521 save percentage. Espinoza recorded nearly 13 saves per game in 2017, while the Vikings boast eight players offensively who recorded 10-or-more goals last season.
This matchup against the Cleveland State marks the first of three scrimmages Marquette will play in the weeks leading up to the regular season. The Golden Eagles will face No. 11 Johns Hopkins on Feb. 3 and No. 18 Penn on Feb. 10. Marquette also competed in a pair of scrimmages in Redwood City, California at the end of October, besting both Team Scotland and the University of Utah.
Marquette begins the regular season with a home matchup against Jacksonville on Saturday, Feb. 17 in its lone home contest prior to mid-March.
