BIG EAST Weekly Honors

MILWAUKEE - After opening the season with consecutive wins over ranked opponents, the Marquette University men's lacrosse team entered both national polls for the first time in program history on Monday afternoon, checking in at No. 17 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and No. 18 in the USILA Coaches' Poll.

Redshirt juniors B.J. Grill and Kyle Whitlow also earned recognition from the BIG EAST Conference for their play in victories at then-No. 18/16 Lehigh and then-No. 17/19 Hofstra. Grill was named the league's defensive player of the week for the second time in his career, while Whitlow is on the conference's weekly honor roll.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) began the season with a 10-9 win at Lehigh on Feb. 7 and followed that up with an 11-10 come-from-behind victory at Hofstra on Saturday afternoon in which they trailed by four goals in the second half.

Grill led a Golden Eagles' defensive effort against the Pride that held Hofstra to just two goals in the final 23 minutes of play and, in his head-to-head matchup with Preseason CAA Player of the Year Sam Llinares, he limited the USILA All-American to just three points. In the previous game against Lehigh, Grill did not allow the player he was covering to score.

Whitlow scored a career-high four goals, all of which came in the second half, in the win at Hostra and posted three points, including the game winning tally, against the Mountain Hawks.

Additionally, Marquette head coach Joe Amplo will make an appearance on The Lacrosse Show with Paul Rabil and Paul Carcaterra on Tuesday evening. The show will air from 6-7 p.m. Central time on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 11 a.m. Central time on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Richmond, a team receiving votes in both national polls.
