Melnyk, Byrnes Earn BIG EAST Honor Roll
Feb. 17, 2014
MILWAUKEE - Redshirt senior attackman Tyler Melnyk and redshirt sophomore long stick midfielder Liam Byrnes were both appointed to this week's BIG EAST Honor Roll after their performances in an 11-9 win at Hofstra Saturday.
Melnyk led Marquette (1-1) with three goals and four total points. With the score tied 3-3 late in the first quarter, the Calgary, Alberta native notched three straight, unanswered goals to give MU a 6-3 lead early in the third quarter. The run by Melnyk proved to be the deciding factor in Marquette's win as Hofstra never came within two goals.
On the defensive end, Byrnes (West Islip, N.Y.) was active in halting the Hofstra attack. Byrnes grabbed five groundballs to help Marquette win the groundball battle 36-28. He also caused four of Hofstra's 14 turnovers. MU's defensive unit held the Pride scoreless for nearly a 30-minute stretch from the end of the first quarter to late in the third quarter.
This is the first time any Marquette men's lacrosse player has made a weekly BIG EAST award list.
Also of note, Marquette is receiving votes in this week's Warrior/InsideLacrosse.com DI Media Poll, marking the first time the second-year program has appeared in either national lacrosse poll. Additionally, Inside Lacrosse and ESPN's Quint Kessenich ranked the Golden Eagles No. 20 in his weekly top-20 rankings.
