Marquette’s Nick Grill named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Feb. 20, 2017
NEW YORK – Marquette University defenseman Nick Grill is the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week, while junior goalie Cole Blazer was named to the league’s weekly honor roll after the MU men’s lacrosse team posted a dominating 17-1 victory at Jacksonville in its 2017 season opener.
Grill was the top cover guy for a Marquette defense that posted a program record by allowing Jacksonville to score once after it tallied 12 in its own season lid-lifter. Grill marked JU’s Will Hendrick and did not allow the Dolphins leading scorer to record a goal while covering him. Hendrick, who put up a game-high five goals in JU’s season opener against Lehigh on Feb. 11, did eventually score JU’s lone goal in the fourth quarter.
Blazer shut out the Dolphins over 45 minutes of action and made seven saves to earn his second career BIG EAST weekly honor. The 2016 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection was previously the league’s top weekly defensive player on April 4, 2016 after posting 13 saves in an 11-3 win over then-No. 5 Villanova in his first career start.
Marquette also moved up in both national polls on Monday, vaulting back into the rankings in the USILA Coaches’ Poll at No. 19 and climbing to No. 16 in the media poll.
Monday marks the first time the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week has been awarded for men’s lacrosse. The accolade is the first BIG EAST weekly accolade for Nick Grill and the fourth overall for the Grill family, as former MU All-American B.J. Grill was named the league’s weekly top defensive player three times during his three years in the conference.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 at No. 15/14 Richmond in a noon Central time face-off.
