BIG EAST Release

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette men’s lacrosse team made its return to the national top-20 polls and B.J. Grill was recognized as the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week following a stout 7-2 victory over Richmond.

Marquette (2-0) checks in at No. 19 in the USILA/Nike Coaches Poll and sits at No. 17 in the Cascade/Maverik Media Poll, making an appearance to the national polls for the first time this season.

Grill spearheaded an historic effort by the Marquette defense that limited Richmond, a team that was receiving votes in the media poll, to only two goals. The Senior CLASS Award candidate tied a career high with a game-best five ground balls and also caused three turnovers against the Spiders.

In the effort, MU set a program record by allowing only two goals, which is the lowest total UR has ever scored in a game. The Marquette defense also completely shut down Richmond leading scorer Mitch Goldberg as the junior did not record a point for the first time in 27 contests.

Richmond was held scoreless for a stretch of 36:45 to start the game, followed by another scoreless span of 22:23.

The Golden Eagles boast the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, having just allowed nine goals in their first two games of the year against Bellarmine and Richmond.

Marquette returns to action this weekend at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Columbus, Ohio. MU will face host Ohio State on Friday, March 4 at 5 p.m. Central time and will take on Detroit at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 6.
