MILWAUKEE - Redshirt junior Liam Byrnes of the Marquette University men's lacrosse team was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after the Golden Eagles posted a 2-0 weekend and moved to 5-0 on the season.

Byrnes, a long-stick midfielder, was inserted into the starting lineup on defense against Ohio State on Sunday for the first time this season and matched up against reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Jesse King, whom he limited to a single goal early in the matchup.

After King notched three consecutive assists between the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second, Byrnes neutralized him over the final 43:17 of regulation. . The West Islip, New York native also caused a game-high four turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

Trailing 6-4, Byrnes ripped his second goal of the year and fourth of his career on a give-and-go from Jacob Richard. The redshirt junior is now tied for sixth among all Division I active long pole players in career points with 10.

Byrnes helped Marquette finish 2-0 at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic by picking up a combined six ground balls and causing seven turnovers in wins over Detroit and Ohio State.


 

 

Now 5-0, the Golden Eagles moved up in the national polls to No. 15 in the USILA rankings and No. 13 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. MU also entered the top 10 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine rankings Monday.

Following a week of practice, the Golden Eagles will embark on their annual spring break trip. The team will make stops in Jacksonville on Friday, March 6 and Mercer on Sunday, March 8 for a second consecutive week of two games in three days.
