Marquette Men's Lacrosse Faces Off with Detroit Saturday
March 14, 2014
DETROIT, Mich. -- The Marquette University men's lacrosse team plays its third game in eight days when it travels to Detroit to take on the Titans Saturday.
Faceoff at Titan Field is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central Time (Noon E.T.). Fans traveling to the game can purchase tickets through DetroitTitans.com.
Marquette (1-5) is looking to put Tuesday night's defeat at Duke behind them when they take on Detroit, whom MU defeated 14-9 last season.
Despite going down 11-1 to the Blue Devils after the first quarter Tuesday, the Golden Eagles found their footing in the second quarter when Tyler Melnyk put two shots by Duke's goalie to give him his fourth hat trick of the season.
Redshirt sophomore middie Kyle Whitlow also added a pair of goals including a highlight reel behind-the-head strike on a pass from Melnyk. Faceoff specialist Cullen Cassidy also chipped in his first goal of the season following a faceoff win in the third quarter.
Despite the defeat, MU turned the ball over just 13 times compared to Duke's 15. A turnover rate of 12.3 per game leads the BIG EAST and ranks fifth in all of NCAA Division I.
Detroit (3-3) is coming off a 9-8 victory over Wagner last Saturday. The Titans were led by Alex Maini who scored four goals and Mike Birney, whose man-up goal with one second remaining in the game sealed the victory for Detroit. The game-winning goal increased the Titans' Division I leading man-up scoring percentage to .682 (15-22).
Following Saturday's game, the Golden Eagles return to Milwaukee for their home opener to kick off BIG EAST play against Villanova on March 22.
