BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Graduate defenseman Liam Byrnes and senior attackman Conor Gately were each selected to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday afternoon following Marquette’s 13-5 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday. It is the first weekly honor of the season for both players.

Byrnes tied a Marquette program-record with nine ground balls and caused four Robert Morris turnovers in the win. The BIG EAST Conference Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year was part of an MU defensive effort that held RMU’s leading scorer Luke Laszkiewicz pointless for the first time in his last seven games.

The graduate student sits fifth in the league with 3.40 ground balls per game and is the only player among the conference’s leaders to not be a faceoff specialist.

Gately, a Tewaaraton Award candidate, recorded his second hat trick in a row and added a pair of assists for a game-high five points. He sparked the MU offense to a season-high goal output despite MU being without the services of all-time leading goal scorer Kyle Whitlow for the first game in program history.

The Golden Eagles (4-1) head to the East Coast this weekend for a Saturday, March 19 game at Quinnipiac.
