Thomson and Melillo on BIG EAST Honor Roll

BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Marquette University juniors Tanner Thomson and Zachary Melillo were named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll for men’s lacrosse, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Thomson posted a career-best six goals in Saturday’s 17-9 win over St. John’s, while Melillo earned recognition after winning a career-best 19 and going 11-of-11 in the second half.

Thomson, a 2016 All-BIG EAST Championship Team selection, doubled his season goal scoring output against the Red Storm as he helped the Golden Eagles (6-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) tie their single-game program record with 17 goals. The Toronto native scored Saturday’s first goal at the 12:40 mark of the opening frame and went on to score three times in the third quarter as MU pulled away from a one-goal halftime lead.

He was just one goal shy of the Marquette individual single-game goal scoring record of seven posted by teammate Andy DeMichiei against St. John’s last season.

Thomson has started all nine games as a junior and has recorded 12 goals and four assists. He started 12 of 15 games as a sophomore following the early season-ending injury to Kyle Whitlow and scored 12 of his 19 goals in 2016 over the season’s final four games.

It is the first BIG EAST weekly honor of Thomson’s career and the third of Melillo’s.
