NEW YORK -- Marquette University redshirt junior long-stick midfielder Liam Byrnes was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week for men's lacrosse on Monday afternoon and junior midfielder Blaine Fleming was named to the weekly honor roll.

Byrnes scored a goal at No. 1 Notre Dame on Tuesday afternoon and added a pair of assists in Marquette's victory at Providence on Saturday. The West Islip, New York native put the Golden Eagles on the board just seven seconds into the contest against the Irish after picking up a ground ball off the opening face-off. He posted six ground balls at ND in addition to five against the Friars, and caused three turnovers against each squad.

It is the second weekly honor of the season for the All-BIG EAST long stick midfield selection and the second time in his career he has been named the league's defensive player of the week.

Fleming earns his first BIG EAST accolade on the heels of his first career hat trick at Notre Dame and a two-goal performance at Providence. The Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania native sits sixth on the Golden Eagles with 15 goals and two assists on the year.

Coming off a 1-1 week, Marquette held steady at No. 15 in the USILA Coaches' Poll and moved up one spot in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll to No. 15 on Monday afternoon.
