Wagner and Fleming garner weekly accolades
April 16, 2018
Wagner earned his second BIG EAST Conference Attack Player of the Week after posting a career-high six points and the overtime winner against PC on Saturday afternoon. He also earned Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
The junior had a hand in four of Marquette’s six goals in its fourth quarter comeback, including three goals in the final 1:51 of game play. Wagner scored his second of the day with 1:37 remaining after the Friars had taken an 11-7 lead at the 2:26 mark. He then scored with 36 seconds left for a hat trick and posted the overtime goal 14 seconds into the extra session. It was his fourth OT winner of the year and fifth overall (all have come in OT or the final 10 seconds of regulation).
Wagner’s winner wouldn’t have been possible without Fleming’s fourth quarter heroics. The redshirt freshman, who was named as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, had a career-high four points against the Friars and scored both of his goals in the late minutes of the fourth quarter. Fleming scored his first of the day with 3:35 left and his final last second shot forced overtime.
Wagner, who had two goals and an assist against the Irish as well, also earned BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week on March 26 for his OT winner against Georgetown, while Fleming garnered the league’s top freshman honor on March 19. Fleming had a goal against Notre Dame.
The Golden Eagles (6-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) resume action on Friday, April 20 against No. 3 Duke in North Carolina at 6 p.m. Central time.
